I started the first in this series two weeks ago. Sharpe's Battle is the twelfth historical novel in the Richard Sharpe series by Bernard Cornwell, first published in 1995. Born in poverty, he joined the army to escape jail and climbed the ranks by sheer brutal courage. There's also some really gritty fighting, particularly in the town towards the end.
