As a fluent French speaker I am often asked if I come from the North, which is where I learned French, I strongly suggest that the ‘cockney’ accent is to accentuate the working class and is probably using a reference to ‘Oliver Twist’…. Did the revolutionaries in 1832 use a different flag for the barricades (General Lamarque actually died on June 5, 1832; this event sparked the revolutionaries to go “to the barricades!”). After that - or if you find that it's no problem at all - move on to to actual french literature.

In what ways is this story dependent on and independent of its setting? I believe the blue, white, red striped flag was restored by the actual July Revolution of 1830. It’s a stunning paragraph.
Great article, thouroughly enjoyed it and has very useful information for my A2 English coursework. Twenty years in the conception and execution, Les Misérables was first published in France and Belgium in 1862, a year which found Victor Hugo in exile from his beloved France. In general, academic versions of Les Mis will offer the best translations with useful annotations. No wonder I was confused. Hugo's gift to the people simultaneously affirms that every citizen is important to the health of the nation and emphasizes how that fact gives each individual responsibility for the conditions we all share.

I recall "Le voyageur sans bagage" by Anouilh being more readable, but that was a long time ago. I had to talk my way into the course (my French was rusty), but the professor reluctantly let me in because I'd already read Les Misérables unabridged in English. The way that the prisoners were treated, the way that Fontine (sp?) Vendée.
