The post is now updated. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s mission is to protect, manage, and advocate for the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. Manchester Center has Thai, Chinese, Mexican, ice cream, pizza, and fast food. If you feel inclined, feel free to add a link to my posts and I’ll do the same for you if we cover the same town. The ski hut is kept open for hikers.
Whether you stay in Manchester Center or not, do yourself a favor and coordinate your plans so you spend the night on Bromley Mountain. The Farmers Market happens every Thursday afternoon at Adams Park (intersection of Main Street and Center Hill Road).
This quaint hub sits off of Mile 1,651 going northbound. The Dana Thompson Recreation Area is a short walk from the center and offers showers for long distance hikers during regular business hours (802-362-1439). You can get everything for the next 53-mile stretch to Killington, along with a pint of ice cream.

Stop by the new “Experience Manchester” visitor center on the corner of Rte 11/30 and Rte 7A for up to date information about events in the area. The store appreciates if hikers don’t crowd the shopping cart/entrance area while sorting everything after purchasing. I was planning to get perspectives from certain people who have made large impacts on certain towns eventually, but I don’t think it will overlap with your idea. Even though there are an abundance of hotels and motels in the area, availability of rooms can be an issue during the season.
Manchester has been a favorite Green Mountain resort destination since the 19th Century and consequently you will see classic architecture mixed with modern shopping districts. Check out the Green Mountain House if you like local trail hostels. My name is James - I grew up in Wisconsin, and now I live in Denver, CO working as an engineer.
Hiker services are all conveniently located near the downtown. Marble quarries in the region provided much of the stone for historic buildings in New York City and Washington, D.C. A few miles west of Manchester, the Dorset Quarry still exists as a popular swimming hole and a cool place to spend a hot summer day. Manchester Center has every resource hikers need, and is a great place to spend a night.

Robert Todd Lincoln spent summers in Manchester Center. The Red Sled Motel offers free shuttles from the trail and is hiker-friendly, and there’s also an Econo Lodge between town and the trail.
President Abraham Lincoln’s son Robert Todd Lincoln made his home in Manchester Village where his Hildene mansion is open to the public and remains as a beautiful legacy of the era.
Many local residents are happy to share their car and swap stories of the trail while delivering you to your downtown destination.

In town, you’ll be able to do a full Price Chopper grocery resupply and catch a movie at the Village Picture Show… in the same complex. Or Olympia Sports (some shoes/sports clothing), Eddie Bauer.

If you’re up for breakfast, there is a breakfast diner place called Up For Breakfast. Don’t miss it. So Vermont” by Greg Cutler BirchTree Productions. John O’Keefe, Town Manager, Manchester VT, the Green Mountain House is the place to stay, free ice cream with stay, shuttle to town and trail, a real home feeling and just a great place. The Price Chopper is a full-service grocery store. This parking lot serves local day hikers… just ask them to drop you off at the Price Chopper grocery store. It doesn’t get much better than this. The Green Mountain Hiker Hostel is open during the summer and it is recommended that you make reservations for your arrival. As a designated AT Community, hikers will find plenty of opportunity for resupply and hiker-friendly amenities. Manchester Center is part of what makes the Appalachian Trail what it is. Watch for “Hiker Friendly” signs posted around town at businesses that cater to hikers. EMS is out of business in Manchester and Rutland.
I appreciate you commenting. The confluence of the Appalachian and Long Trails in southern Vermont makes Manchester a hub of hiker activity during the summer months. The more the merrier. We were recently designated as an AT Community, too! I was hoping eventually someone else might want to start covering PCT and other trail towns not on the AT as well. Closed legal holidays. Official copies of minutes may be obtained in the Town Clerk’s Office during regular business hours. Hey man, I was also planning on featuring trail towns in my future Trek articles but my approach was going to be from the perspective of townspeople; their experiences with hikers, what they think of hikers, etc..Hope this doesn’t encroach on your series.

Hike into town on Rootville Road (2.2 miles) or hitch an easy ride from the 11/30 road crossing (5 miles).
In 2015, I thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail as Autodraft. Zoom in on the street view image if you don’t believe me.
You’ll see a parking lot where the AT crosses VT-11, which makes it an easy spot to hitchhike.

If you have some extra time, there’s a library and post office along with a Northshire Bookstore. Northbounders will notice prices gradually increasing as they get closer to ski towns, but you can still find a room for around $30/person if you share. Thanks Silvia!
