Go with the Z-man version with animal meeples. I replaced my disks with meeples long ago so I saw no benefit in 'upgrading'.

Agricola can be a rather punishing game for new players.
I'm sure there are ways to use the new revised card decks and farmers of the moor with the old edition.

I just purchased the revised Agricola 2 weeks ago and bloody love it. Feb 20, 2018. I read the original back in 1969, shortly after the movie came out. I love this book, BOTH versions. But there are still a lot of them. Probably the most difficult part of Agricola is the multiple economic systems that run side by side.

The revised edition is missing something like 100 cards, is only 4-player, and the art on the original board is better and the action spaces are clearer to beginners. I tried looking on the Asmodee website seeing as they bought Mayfair games but the retail version of their site is missing and only the corporate one for retailers is still up.

I've read only the revised edition, although I have an old paperback of the original. New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast. I also have the Z-man edition (played to death) and I think the only benefit to the new edition is the new meeples (and a reasonably-priced Farmers of the Moor, but the base game is already fantastic). Component-wise, this new edition is full of animeeples, as opposed to the cubes of the vary earliest releases. If you have an original edition I don't think buying the revised edition will do much for you. Since the release of the Mayfair edition I've seen comments on how the original 308-card set was unbalanced, which the new set 'fixes'. Check boardgamegeek. I have read both. This new Revised Edition of Agricola is a revamped version of the original that's not that much different from the original (2007).

From my plays, there's no balance issues in casual play (10>7) nor competitive after drafting and removing the concensus ~8 strongest cards from the game. There are several analyses out there (you can Google to find them). The overwhelming majority of players I've seen on here and BGG prefer revised. In Agricola, players are farmers that sow, plow the fields, collect wood, build stables, buy animals, expand their farms and feed their families.After 14 rounds players calculate their score based on the size and prosperity of the household. Didn't pay attention.
Has anyone here read the original version and the revised edition? Edit2: I guess the point is play Agricola. Maybe once FotM comes out it'll be a different story. They are both good - the book impacted on me more than my Jesuit education. Has anyone heard about a deluxe edition or Big Box coming for Agricola? (Unless I also had an offer for someone to buy my older edition for near retail, or was planning on gifting a used copy to someone who I know wanted the game).
The book still haunts me, but I will say that I think Fowles understands the existential male better than he understands the existential female.
